Uncle Bunny’s Beer Can Chicken

Spring will be here soon and grilling weather will be in full swing! My brother Bunny has been making Beer Can Chicken for years. Recently we began to question why Beer Can Chicken is so delicious? Is it the beer flavor, or is it the moisture the beer provides?

It’s no secret that in the south we often cook with Coca-Cola (see my Coca Cola Ham here!) so I wondered if soda can chicken would be a hit as well.

One Sunday we prepped 6 whole chickens and grilled each over a different type of beer or soda. The result was that each and every chicken was moist, delicious and…funny enough…tasted nearly the same!

So whether you prefer to use Budweiser or Orange Crush, this recipe will provide you with a “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner”!

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Serves: 6

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Preheat grill to 325 degrees F.

  2. Pat chicken dry with paper towels.

  3. In a small bowl, combine all seasonings and oil until it forms a paste.

  4. Rub entire chicken with paste.

  5. Take the beer can and make sure that it is open and only half-filled with beer. Lower the chicken on to the open can, so that the chicken is sitting upright, with the can in its cavity.

  6. Place a roasting pan or baking sheet underneath to catch the juices and place it directly on the grill.

  7. Grill for 1 hour and 15 minutes

  8. When internal temperature reaches 165 degrees remove chicken from grill and let sit for 10 minutes before serving.
