MawMaw’s Fried Rutabagas

Beginning in September, we start seeing rutabagas in the grocery stores again here in South Carolina. A rutabaga is somewhere between a turnip and a cabbage and growing up I always remember my Mama making fried rutabagas for my Daddy.

I can’t say they are the most requested food by my kids but they are definitely one of those foods that are nostalgic—the type of food that people remember their grandparents eating.

I hope that someone can use this recipe from MawMaw to take their own family down memory lane.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients:

3 rutabagas
2 tablespoons bacon grease
1 teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper

Instructions:

  1. Wash and peel rutabagas

  2. Carefully chop the rutabagas into one inch cubes. Rutabagas can be very hard so chop with care.

  3. Heat bacon grease over medium high heat in a large saute pan.

  4. Add rutabagas, salt, pepper and sugar to the pan.

  5. Add enough water to the pan to completely cover rutabagas.

  6. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, place lid on pan and simmer on medium heat for 35-40 minutes or until the rutabagas are fork tender.

  7. Drain excess liquid.

  8. Add additional salt or pepper to taste.

  9. Serve as a side dish.

*Olive oil or the cooking oil of your choice can be used as a substitute for the bacon grease however the flavor will change.
