Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy

Comfort food. The Oxford Dictionary defines comfort food as: food that provides consolation or a feeling of well-being, typically associated with childhood or home cooking.

When I think of comfort food, I immediately think of my Mama's hamburger steaks in onion gravy.

It takes me back to a moment on a cool day, sitting at my Mama's red kitchen counter with a hot bowl of mashed potatoes topped with hamburger steak and onion gravy.

My Mama was a stay-at-home mom when I was very young. My brother and I didn't know it but money was tight. I'm sure this meal was created as an effort to stretch a dollar but it is still one of my very favorite meals and it takes me back home every single time.

If you are looking for hot comfort food that your family will ask for again and again, this recipe is for you.

2 pounds ground beef
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 (14.5-ounce) beef broth
1 (0.87-ounce) package brown gravy mix

  6. Add onion to skillet and cook over medium heat for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring frequently, until just tender.

  7. In a small bowl, whisk together broth and gravy mix until smooth.

  8. Stir broth mixture into skillet. Add patties and bring to a boil.

  9. Reduce heat, and simmer for 10-12 minutes until gravy is thick and patties are cooked through.
