Granddaddy Champ’s Boiled Peanuts

In my opinion, the boiled peanut is the quintessential southern snack. Peanuts are not actually nuts at all but are legumes. If you are trying boiled peanuts for the first time, the taste and texture may be similar to that of a pea or lentil.

In South Carolina most folks buy their boiled peanuts from roadside stands and everyone has an opinion on where to buy the very best. Boiled peanuts are so serious here that there is currently a turf war in southern Lexington County between two boiled peanut vendors which, entertainingly, plays out on social media from time to time.

While everyone has their favorite, my favorite boiled peanut has always and will always be those made by my Dad, also known now as Granddaddy Champ.

He meticulously picks through the peanut bushels at the market to choose the very best and somehow gets the salt to water ratio perfect, every single time.

Peanuts are a blank canvas and while I’m just a salt girl myself, peanuts are definitely asking you to season with your heart. So feel free to experiment with cajun seasoning, old bay, hot peppers, or a mix of your own!
