Red Velvet Cake

 

Prep Time: 10-15 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients for Cake:

1 cup Crisco Shortening
1 ½ cups sugar
2 tbsp Hershey’s Powdered Cocoa
2 ¼ cups cake flour
1 tbsp vinegar
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
2oz. red food dye or coloring 
½ tsp baking soda
1 tbsp vanilla

Ingredients for Cream Cheese Frosting:

2 sticks unsalted butter
16 oz. whipped cream cheese
8 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla


Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

2. In a large mixing bowl, mix all cake ingredients until combined.  

5. Spray two 9” round baking pans with non-stick cooking spray. 

6. Pour cake batter evenly into each pan. 

7. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees or until a toothpick comes out of the center clean. 

8. Let cool before removing from the pan. 

9. While cooling, make the frosting. Mix all frosting ingredients with a hand mixer until combined and fluffy.

10. Once cakes have finished cooling, place one cake on a serving stand, spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top of the cake.  

11. Place the second layer of cake on top of the 1st layer and cover the entire cake with frosting. For an extra pretty topping, take a little excess cake crumble and sprinkle the top!
