Fried chicken is by all means a quintessential southern dish. Everyone has a secret recipe.

With a little pinch of this and a little dab of that, fried chicken always seems to have its own character, flavor, and history—each bite delivering a unique and tasty culinary experience.

As you might have guessed, I happen to believe MawMaw’s fried chicken is some of the best you’ll ever find. And if you haven’t made fried chicken before at home, this is sure to be a treat.

This recipe takes only 20 minutes and I know you’ll enjoy!


Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes per batch

Ingredients:
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 cups self rising flour
1 cup Frank’s Red Hot Original Sauce
1 whole chicken cut into pieces
3 cups Crisco Shortening
3 eggs


Instructions:

  1. Heat Crisco in a large cast iron skillet or dutch oven to 350 degrees F. 

  2. Mix flour, salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder on a plate or shallow dish.

  3. In a bowl, beat eggs and Frank’s Red Hot sauce until combined.

  4. Dip chicken into egg and Frank's Red Hot mixture and then coat chicken with seasoned flour.

  5. Drop coated chicken pieces into Crisco oil.  

  6. Fry until golden brown.  

*White meat pieces usually fry in 9-10 minutes while dark meat pieces take 11-13 minutes. You may use a meat thermometer to ensure that the internal temperature of the chicken has reached a minimum of 165 degrees.
