MawMaw’s Fried Chicken
Fried chicken is by all means a quintessential southern dish. Everyone has a secret recipe.
With a little pinch of this and a little dab of that, fried chicken always seems to have its own character, flavor, and history—each bite delivering a unique and tasty culinary experience.
As you might have guessed, I happen to believe MawMaw’s fried chicken is some of the best you’ll ever find. And if you haven’t made fried chicken before at home, this is sure to be a treat.
This recipe takes only 20 minutes and I know you’ll enjoy!

Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes per batch
Ingredients:
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 cups self rising flour
1 cup Frank’s Red Hot Original Sauce
1 whole chicken cut into pieces
3 cups Crisco Shortening
3 eggs
Instructions:
- Heat Crisco in a large cast iron skillet or dutch oven to 350 degrees F. 
- Mix flour, salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder on a plate or shallow dish. 
- In a bowl, beat eggs and Frank’s Red Hot sauce until combined. 
- Dip chicken into egg and Frank's Red Hot mixture and then coat chicken with seasoned flour. 
- Drop coated chicken pieces into Crisco oil. 
- Fry until golden brown. 
*White meat pieces usually fry in 9-10 minutes while dark meat pieces take 11-13 minutes. You may use a meat thermometer to ensure that the internal temperature of the chicken has reached a minimum of 165 degrees.
